Originally sold as the 1985 Chevy Sprint, the 1986 Sprint is the second
generation of this tiny Suzuki-engineered minicar to be sold in the U.S.
It comes in two body styles, a familiar 2 door hatchback and a four-door
hatchback. Buyers in this part of the car market overwhelmingly prefer
the less-expensive 2 door versions. It is powered by a 1.0-liter three-cylinder
engine that revs easily but gets noisy and vibrates at higher speed s.
I'd use this car for short commutes, but there are smoother highway cars
available for not much more money. With the car's rear seat up, the trunk
carries only 8.4 cubic feet of stuff, but with the seat folded, cargo room
expands to 21.9 cubic feet. The hatchback keeps its tiny 10.3 cubic
feet of storage space behind the rear seat. Tall folks fit in the front
seat of either Sprint minicar with acceptable comfort, but the rear seats
are crowded in either model. Space is not usually a big priority with minicar
buyers, however. The interior of the sprint is functional and pleasing
and doesn't look cheap. The inside door panels are covered in a cloth pattern,
and the seats are supportive, comfortable, and covered with natty-looking
fabric.
